There are many local parks or walking paths where you can go to play sports or just be active through walking or jogging. We have created this resource to help you in your journey of healthy living.
PARKS AND OUTDOOR RECREATION NEAR PATERSON, NEW JERSEY
Paterson is the largest town in Passaic County and it is also where the county seat is located. Due to its size, Paterson offers many parks and recreation areas, some of which a very significant to Passaic County like the Garret Mountain Reservation or “Great Falls” National Park.
GARRET MOUNTAIN RESERVATION
Some Basic Facts:
Although most of the park is located within Woodland Park (formerly known as West Paterson) NJ, it also extends into Paterson and also Clifton. People looking to enter the park from Paterson should use Valley Rd. You can also use this handy link if you need help with driving directions to get to Garret Mountain Park.
“The reservation covers the northernmost part of the First Watchung Mountain and reaches over 500 feet (150 m) above sea level.” (wikipedia) It provides wide views of New Jersey and the New York City skyline.
Amenities and Facilities
The park provides great facilities like horseback riding at their equestrian center (They also have a Therapeutic Riding program), picnic areas, athletic fields, and various trails.
Healthy Living Through Exercise
The various fields can be used to play soccer, baseball, or frisbee and there are basketball courts, as well. The different trails are miles long and are frequently used by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) for their cross-country races. However, everyday people looking to be healthy can use them for jogging, hiking, or even just walking through the woods and enjoying the trees and plant life.
PATTERSON FALLS NATIONAL PARK ( AKA: “GREAT FALLS”)

Hours: The website does not list an hours, but…the falls are always open!
This national park is more of a historic site than some of the other parks we have covered. It’s main attraction is, of course, the large waterfalls. At 77 feet high, the “Great Falls” as they are sometimes called, are one of the largest in the United States.
In addition to sightseeing and looking at the plant and animal life near the falls, the site offers a museum and ranger led tours. They even mention something called “The Forgotten Trail.” Or, if you prefer to walk at your own pace on your own schedule, they also offer self-guided tours.

EAST SIDE PARK
East Side Park is located along Route 20 and overlooks the Passaic River on the east side of Paterson. The park has a historic element to it but is most often used for picnics, barbecues and other, bigger gatherings like carnivals. There is plenty of space for frisbee, soccer or football and often host local baseball games.
